Yankee colonists began inhabiting Chicago, Illinois after 1830, due to the rich farming soil. The commissioners of Cook County constructed roads running south and west in order to make the farmlands available for the trade industry. One road they constructed crossed the Des Plaines River, referred to then as a "dismal swamp", continuing southwesterly to present day Plainfield, which was called Walker's Grove then. Now, when staying in one of the luxury hotels Chicago visitors can enjoy a highly artistic culture, with many other highlights as well.

The Art Chicago Annual International Fair of Contemporary and Modern Art is held from late April to early May at the Merchandise Mart. It features sketches, photography, paintings, video, sculpture, prints and more, providing artists, curators, collectors and other fans of art an opportunity to see the latest and greatest works of various galleries. Galleries from all over the world feature their best art here, from the Louvre and Seoul's Chosun Art Gallery to London's Quantum Contemporary Art and more. The event offers VIP tickets along with an opening preview where visitors can view the art before the public access.

The Chicago Jazz Festival is said to be the biggest in the world and is held for four days in early September. It has been running for over three decades, featuring the new, the old and the experimental. It has presented popular jazz artists in addition to local high school and college jazz bands. Performances are primarily held at Grant Park and Millennium Park. Past featured performances include the Jodie Christian Quintet, flutist Nichole Mitchell and pianist Anthony Davis, the Chi Arts Jazz Combo, West End Jazz Band and Chuchito Valdez Afro-Cuban Ensemble.

The County Fair is held in mid-September at the Garfield Park Conservatory. General admission is free, though some events have a small fee. Highlights include food, live music, activities for kids, the farmer's market and harvest competition. Activities for kids include storytelling and a petting zoo. Other activities include various demonstrations from modern gardening to fishing, a recipe swap and sharpening for garden tools.

For animal lovers of luxury hotels Chicago is home to the Lincoln Park Zoo, one of the top zoos in the country, with a wide variety of animals from reptiles and mammals to birds and amphibians. Birds include the green aracari, the extinct-in-nature Guam Micronesian kingfisher and Guam rail, the sunbittern, tawny frogmouth, lesser green broadbill, blyth's hornbill, African spoonbill, black necked stilt, chinstrap penguin and more. Rare mammals include the Asian small clawed otter, bactrian camel, black and white colobus, brush tailed bettong and the Patagonian cavy.

The Museum of Science and Industry features temporary exhibits on a variety of relevant topics. One example is the Body Worlds and the Cycle of Life, a display for all ages detailing the human miracle with over two hundred pieces of human anatomy. The Suited for Space exhibit gives visitors an inside look at the technology involved in a space suit, with exclusive photographs and X-ray images to back it up. It also takes visitors through the evolution of space suits, from the first models to Neil Armstrong's Apollo suit.

As the Lincoln Park Zoo does not feature fish, the Shedd Aquarium makes a fine complementary visit. Visitors can attend an aquatic show featuring belugas and dolphins at the aquarium's Abbott Oceanarium Amphitheatre. The Amazon Rising display features rays, spiders, piranhas, anacondas and crocodiles. The Caribbean Reef features the moray eel, sharks, parrotfish, rays and the green sea turtle. Sea lions, sea otters, belugas, dolphins and more can be found at the Abbott Oceanarium and the Polar Play Zone features penguins and a sea star touch pool. Knife fish, a giant octopus, sea stars and moon jellies inhabit the Waters of the World.

When searching for luxury hotels Chicago visitors will find that many feature room service, concierge service, valet parking, on-site restaurants and bars. Other common amenities include safety deposit boxes, luggage storage, laundry and dry cleaning. A currency exchange and on-site gift shops are typical while a few feature babysitting services and boxed lunches. Activities include saunas, spas, jacuzzis, fitness centers and swimming pools. Meeting and banquet rooms and business centers are common.
